First Day of School Survival Guide

Hello Parents and new students, my name is Ms. LaToya Douglas and I am honored to be your child's K teacher for 2010-2011 school year. Your child is about to experience one of the most important milestone in his or her life, the first day of School! I know that many of you are excited as well as a little apprehensive (or a little of both). I hope this survival guide will help you to know what to expect in Kindergarten this year and answer any questions you may have. Welcome!!!
The following are some helpful tips to help make the first day of Kindergarten a special day.
1. Talk to your child about their new school since they might not know what to expect on the first day. Keep the conversation light.
2. Prepare your child socially. Consider organizing a few play dates with other kids and moms about a month or so before the first day of school.
3. Practice the basics in numbers, letters and colors with your kid. Have your child practice writing their own name and count with him or her often.
4. Help your kid develop fine motor skills with tasks that teach coordination. Simple things like pouring a glass of milk or using forks and spoons are great.
5. Read to your child every day, and at night before bed. The more words they learn, the better their vocabulary.
6. Before the first day, take a tour of the school. Also you can set up a meeting with the teacher if she is available. (Which I will be!)
7. Make sure that your kids go to bed early the night before. Also packing their book bag with their school supplies can be fun too!
8. Feed them a good breakfast in the morning before you leave for school.
Parent-Teacher communication is a vital part of your child’s education. Throughout the year I will communicate with you as much as possible. I encourage you to contact me if you have any questions or concerns.
